What is the cat’s need for water?

How much water is needed for your cat and what determines the amount of fluid used, we will try to understand this article.

There are hot summer days and now more than ever it is important to have fresh drinking water. Cats have a unique ability to retain fluid in the body by concentrating urine. This skill is rooted in antiquity when our little four-legged friends were wild and lived in the desert steppe zones. Modern cats have inherited this skill from their ancestors, but how much water your cat really needs and what the amount of fluid used depends on, we will try to figure this article out.

What determines the amount of fluid consumed by a cat?

The main factors that have a decisive influence on the intensity of fluid intake by our pets are:

Age

Diet

Ambient temperature

Physiological loss

So, let’s start in order. The age of the cat has a direct effect on the concentration of water in the body of the animal. Kittens have a higher metabolism than adults, while they need more water, because their body is developing rapidly. The fluid concentration in the body of adults is 50-60%, in kittens 70-80%.
To a greater extent, the need for drinking water depends on the diet of your pet. Surely, those readers who feed their cat or cat canned food, noticed that their pet drinks very rarely. And vice versa, those cats whose basis of the diet is dry food with a moisture content of about 8%, drink clean water quite often. Therefore, if you feed your four-legged friend with dry food, be sure to always keep the bowl full of water, while the water should be fresh and the bowl clean, as harmful microorganisms develop very quickly in stagnant water. It should also be borne in mind that the likelihood of developing urolithiasis in cats is practically independent of the type of food consumed, but is due to the mineral composition of urine and its acidity.

Ambient temperature does not have too much effect on the amount of fluid consumed. Cats have much less moisture due to respiration and salivation than dogs.

A physiological factor includes loss of moisture in urine, feces, breathing, and salivation. It is worth considering that with constant licking, cats can lose up to 20% of the fluid from the body. A pathological factor is also present: diarrhea, vomiting and various diseases of the kidneys and urogenital tract.

How much water does a cat need per day?

Your cat herself knows very well how much fluid she needs, so you should not force the animal to drink by force. The main task of the owner is to provide his pet with constant and unhindered access to the drinker. There is an approximate formula for calculating the conditional amount of fluid needed for an adult and healthy cat per day – the weight of your animal in grams, multiplied by a factor of 0.03. It should be borne in mind that this volume includes all the moisture consumed by the cat per day, including from food.

When to look at your pet?

If, under equal conditions, the cat begins to consume too much, or vice versa, too little fluid, or simply sits above a bowl and does not touch the water, then this fact cannot be ignored. All unexpected changes in the behavior of animals may indicate hidden health problems of your pet.
