Do you know why cats are afraid of water?
Cats – creatures wayward, independent and mysterious. One of their interesting features is chronic bathing intolerance. Why are cats afraid of water? You will be surprised, but most cats are skilled swimmers from birth. A person who is afraid of water, as you know, will not swim.
Why don’t cats like to swim?
Zoologists, seriously interested in this issue, came to the conclusion that the mustachioers are not at all afraid of water. They avoid bathing for other, absolutely justified reasons:
Imposed procedure. The cat sincerely does not understand why the owner forcibly places her in the bath and washes it with synthetic shampoo with unpleasant perfume additives. The flavors present in animal shampoos, from the point of view of the pet, smell disgusting. Why endure bathing if the purr can clean itself?
Risk of hypothermia / overheating. Why are cats afraid of water? They do not want to freeze. Between the feline skin and coat there is an air gap that plays an important role in the thermoregulation of the body. Wet hair ceases to protect the cat from freezing, and a whiskered friend can not dry quickly. The same air cushion protects the animal from overheating, not allowing the scorching sun to heat the skin.
Odor enhancement. By nature, cats hunt in ambush. Wet coat smells much stronger, scaring away the victim. At the same time, strong aromas make the cat easy prey for a larger predator.
Dirt / bacteria. Wet hair is an invitation for dust, dirt and various bacteria that subsequently enter the animal’s stomach.
Flushing grease. The hair of cats is coated with a special lubricant that protects the hairs from brittleness, makes the hair luxurious and shiny. Water degreases the coat, worsening its condition.
Let’s say the cat survived swimming. He needs to lick hard for 2-3 hours to get his coat in order. Pets do not like the smell of chlorinated water from the tap, and if they get liquid in their ears, they are at risk of inflammation. Feline animals are naturally shy, and an animal that has not seen water will be wary of swimming.
why cats are afraid of water but not a dog
The last reason is a different body temperature in pets. It is much lower than in humans. Warm water, according to the owner, seems to the pet an ice shower.
Why are cats afraid of water but not dogs?
The answer lies in the wild. Dogs are social animals used to hunting in packs. Cats are lone hunters. They do not drive the victim, but track it, waiting for a long time for a sharp attack.
When wet, the dog quickly shakes off water. Moisture droplets instantly slide off the skin coated with sebum. The dog can snuggle up to relatives and keep warm, stick out its tongue to regulate temperature and avoid overheating. Tribesmen will warn her of the danger and hedge during the hunt.
Cats are individualists. They do not like to cuddle, they do not track down victims, therefore they dry out in solitude. Dry and freeze. The dog dries much faster. She shakes water, runs, jumps.
why are all cats so afraid of water
Central Asia is considered the birthplace of domestic dogs, where animals had to swim across rivers and live in low temperatures. The ancestors of cats lived on the African continent, far from rivers and lakes. At the genetic level, pets understand that water will not bring them good.
Owners accustom a pet to swimming from an early age. Some breeds initially love water (Turkish van, viververin, bengal, Siamese cats). There are several ways to instill a love of water for your pet. All of them are based on the game and affection, the whip method cannot be used.
1. Bath is not an enemy
It is necessary to enter the bathroom with the pet, sharply lift it and put it in an empty bath. The animal must understand that the bath is not a threat. At the same time, praise and stroke the furry. If the ward is calm, turn on the shower and slowly (and most importantly – quietly) begin to fill the bath. If you are very nervous – release the poor fellow. Perform the manipulation until the cat begins to feel more or less comfortable in the bath. When the water level rises 5 cm from the bottom, drag the pet from one end of the bathtub to the other. Make it come to you using a treat. Soon the animal will understand – walking on water is not scary. Perform the procedure for several months, increasing the water level.

2. Gradual addiction
Works on kittens. Periodically put a pet bowl in the bathroom and feed it here, including water at the same time (first set a weak pressure, then stronger). The kitten must get used to the sound of water. Next time, put a basin of water in the bathroom so that the kitten can wet its paws. The new item will interest the purr. There you can throw a windup toy or a paper boat, and the favorite, most likely, will crawl inside. Repeat the manipulation, increasing the water level (maximum – when the water reaches the tummy).
