How long does the cat go from anesthesia after sterilization

Sterilization is a rather complicated operation for a cat. Having decided on surgical intervention, the owner of the furry pet should be aware of the options for sterilization, the recovery time of the cat after anesthesia, and the features of caring for the operated animal. Useful information about the normal behavior of the cat after sterilization will help to avoid unnecessary anxiety and not to miss the dangerous signs indicating the development of complications.
Types of sterilization operations and their features
Cat sterilization is a surgical procedure to avoid painful leaks and solve the problem of reproduction. The recovery period largely depends on the type of surgical intervention:

Ovariectomy is a cat ovary excision. An abandoned uterus does not function and often provokes health problems.
Ovariohysterectomy is the most traumatic intervention. Both the ovaries and the uterus are removed.
Tubal ligation – the operation saves the possibility of mating, but pregnancy does not occur. In this case, estrus continues in cats. Another disadvantage is the increased risk of ovarian inflammation.
Surgical removal of the uterus / ovaries is performed by open (incision in the abdomen) or laparoscopic (small punctures) methods. At the same time, laparoscopy is the least traumatic, and animals tolerate such an operation easier and recover faster. Interruption of each estrus with pills or medical sterilization (hormone injection lasting up to 3-6 months), unlike surgical removal of the uterus / ovaries, increase the likelihood of developing endometritis, ovarian cysts and oncology in cats.

Important! In cats, the testes are removed during castration. Usually, males undergo surgery quite easily and quickly recover.

To avoid undesirable consequences after sterilization, you need to know:

Veterinarians recommend sterilizing cats aged 6-9 months. Early sterilization will minimize pet health problems in the future.
Last feeding 12-16 hours before surgery. It is allowed to give water 3-4 hours before the trip to the veterinarian.
A preliminary examination of a cat in a good veterinary clinic and the use of modern anesthetic drugs practically exclude the development of complications.
The safest type of anesthesia is gas anesthesia (isoflurane, sevoflurane preparations). Inhalation anesthesia minimally affects the internal organs and is allowed for operations in pets with heart disease.
How long does a cat sleep after anesthesia?
When asked about how long the cat moves away from anesthesia after sterilization, only the veterinarian who operated on the animal will accurately answer. The duration of the pet’s stay under anesthesia depends on the type of surgical intervention, the dose and method of administration of the anesthetic, and the characteristics of the body. Typically, the cat is under the influence of anesthesia (completely immobilized, eyes open) 1-3 hours. For 7 hours, the pet periodically wakes up, and then falls asleep again. Do not worry, this is a normal condition.

The condition of the cat immediately after surgery
Some time after surgery (usually several hours), the animal is in the clinic under the supervision of a veterinarian to monitor cardiac activity. The postoperative period, when the animal is still under anesthesia, has its own characteristics:

After sterilization, a special blanket is always put on the cat, which prevents licking of the operation site and divergence of sutures. For cats, this is optional.
Often under the influence of anesthetic, the body temperature of the animal decreases by 1ºC. It is better to put a litter in the carrier, and at home arrange a soft place on the floor, avoiding drafts.
When anesthetized, the animal does not blink. To avoid drying out of the eyes, it is necessary to regularly instill eye drops and cover the eyelids every 30 minutes, until the pet starts blinking itself.
The animal must be laid on its right side to facilitate the work of the heart.
Do not give drink 3-4 hours after surgery.
Important! It is strictly forbidden to use a heating pad to warm the animal. Active warming can provoke inflammation and increases the risk of developing other complications (bleeding, etc.).

The first days after sterilization
When asking the question “how long does the cat move away from anesthesia after sterilization”, the owners usually mean the length of time their pet is in an inadequate state. Some lovers of pussies call this pet behavior “high”.

Upon waking up, the cat can jump up abruptly. And since the orientation after anesthesia is disturbed, the animal may fall off the couch and get bruised. Therefore, the place for the pet is arranged on the floor. A cat can twitch its paws, run randomly, stagger and collide with objects. However, disorientation is only an external manifestation of a temporary impairment of brain function. The main thing is to protect the fluff from accidental injuries and discrepancies in the seams. A feed bowl and tray should be placed next to the bedding.
