How to wash paws for dogs after a walk

Dog owners often have a problem – how to wash their pet’s paws after a walk. Well, if the dog is small, and it can be taken to the bathroom in the arms. Some dogs are pathologically afraid of water, others arrange a flood when washing their paws in a basin. Let us explain the situation according to the following points: how and with what to wash the dog’s paws, how to teach her to “carry out” the hygienic procedure “culturally”.
Washing the dog’s paws: why do it after each walk
Many dog owners wash their pet’s paws exclusively in the autumn-spring period, so that the pet does not leave dirty marks throughout the apartment. However, not only cleanliness in the house requires this. The dog needs to wash its paws in any season for the following reasons:

A dog can come into a puddle with gasoline or a stain of a toxic substance – washing your paws will remove chemicals in a timely manner and prevent pet poisoning.
The dog can cut the paw pads, get a splinter – a hygienic procedure will check the integrity of the skin.
In winter, roads are sprinkled with reagents – they can cause irritation and allergies.
With dirt on its feet, the animal brings ticks and infections to the house, some of which are dangerous not only for the pet itself, but also for people living in the house.
These facts are enough to understand the need to wash the pet’s paws after each walk.

Means for washing paws
Pet stores offer a huge range of products suitable for washing dogs paws. Consider the main ones:

Any shampoo for washing dogs – this way you can wash your paws and your pet. But bacteria and ticks ordinary shampoos do not eliminate.
Tar soap is a low-cost version of hygiene that has antiseptic and antiparasitic properties. Promotes the speedy healing of wounds. However, the pronounced drying effect of tar soap with prolonged use can provoke dry skin and cracks. The best option is the use of shampoos with tar soap. These products have a balanced pH and will not cause harm even with constant use.
Chlorhexidine shampoo – an antibacterial component that will prevent inflammation of microcracks and wounds on the paw pads.
Antiparasitic shampoo – in the assortment there are products based on plant extracts that repel fleas and ticks. At the same time eliminate irritation and have a bactericidal effect.
Shampoo for heavily soiled paws – effectively rinses off fuel oil, engine oil and salt, and plant components provide gentle care. In the absence of such a product at home, severe contamination on the dog’s paws can be removed using an automobile hand gel.
Products with panthenol – such shampoos are suitable for pets who do not particularly choose a place for games and often receive cuts and splintering on their paws.
Hypoallergenic shampoos – recommended for dogs prone to allergic reactions (for example, Chow Chow breeds).
Wet wipes — Suitable for paw hygiene in dry weather. Products from leading manufacturers are saturated with antiseptic, antiparasitic and moisturizing compounds.
Hemostatic powder – an additional tool necessary for cuts. Quickly stops bleeding.
To avoid contamination of the paws, some dog breeders use special shoes. However, not every pet will allow you to put on socks, and they do not solve the problem of a dirty belly. Experienced dog owners recommend rubber socks: in addition to protecting them from pollution, they do not leak water and harmful substances, the dog senses the ground and quickly gets used to shoes.

How to wash your dog’s paws
After walking the small dogs, the owners simply wash their feet either under the tap or in the bathroom. With large pets you have to use a basin. So that the procedure does not cause horror in the dog and takes place calmly, the following rules must be observed:

Check the temperature of the water (not hot!). After a walk in the winter, you can’t wash your dog’s paws with warm water (only cool!). A sharp drop in temperature negatively affects the condition of the animal.
A sponge is used for washing. It perfectly foams shampoo and allows you to economically use detergent.
First, the front paws are washed (then they are placed on a towel spread on the floor). Pets that stain the hair on their stomach should be washed in the bathroom to rinse the shampoo well. At a minimum, wipe the abdomen with a damp cloth.
After each walk, it is necessary to inspect the paws for damage. Stock up with tweezers to remove the splinter.
Microfiber towels are suitable for drying paws. They absorb water perfectly, and your pet will not leave wet traces in the house. Towels should be washed regularly.
Lapomoyki: an easy way to wash dog paws
A new hygienic product – lapomoyki – can significantly facilitate the life of dog owners. The principle of operation is simple: the paw is pushed into a special container in which all the dirt is carefully cleaned with brushes. The hygiene procedure takes place without spray and takes only a few minutes. Shampoos can be used in lapomoyki, but the pet should be accustomed to this procedure.
